IRS no longer sending estate tax closing letters

8-09-15 - For estate tax returns (Form 706) filed after May 31, 2015, the IRS will no longer automatically send closing letters to personal representatives. It is usually the safest course for personal representatives and trustees to delay making distributions to beneficiaries until the closing letter confirms that the estate's tax bill has been settled. Personal representatives who desire written confirmation will now have to specifically request it from the IRS. The agency advises waiting at least four months after the 706 has been filed to make the request.
