Estate Tax certainty still elusive

1-18-2011 - As we reported in our legal update of Jan. 1, Congress passed a new estate tax bill in the waning hours of  the 2010 session. The new bill is not a permanent fix, and is set to expire at the end of 2012. But don't count on stability even until then. As we said in our last post, "Congress can change the law if it so chooses even prior to Dec. 31, 2012." Apparently, Congress so chooses: No less than five new bills have been introduced in the House as of today aiming to repeal the estate tax entirely. One, H.R. 86, is aptly named, the "End Tax Uncertainty Act of 2011." We will continue to keep our clients posted of any substantive changes, and call us for guidance on how to handle this time of uncertainty.
